Woodland site holds first burial

The only designated woodland Jewish burial site has held its first funeral.

Andrea Shall, 55, a mother-of-three from Bromley Reform Synagogue, was buried on Sunday at the new facility at Cheshunt cemetery in Hertfordshire.

Jewish Joint Burial Society chairman Mike Frankl said Mrs Shall “loved nature and used to go for walks in Bluebell Woods [in Kent] in summer”.

The new space has room for 9,000 graves, which will be marked not by tombstones, but by small flat square stones.

“In 50 years time, when the newly planted trees have grown, there will be a glorious woodland,” Mr Frankl added.
The JJBS is used by more than 30 Reform, Liberal and Masorti communities.
