Beau Mills slugged a pair of solo home runs, giving him six for the season, and Andy LaRoche also went deep, as Columbus defeated Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Pa., in an International League game. Starter David Huff (2-1, 2.66 ERA) pitched shutout ball for five innings for the host Clippers.
Notes: Huff has thrown 12 consecutive scoreless innings over his past two games, both wins. The lefty has allowed seven hits and two walks, while striking out nine.
AA Akron Aeros
Aeros 3, Flying Squirrels 2
Akron turned four double plays and completed a three-game weekend sweep of Richmond, Va., at Canal Park. T.J. McFarland (8-1) pitched seven innings and won his sixth straight start in the Eastern League.
Notes: McFarland, a lefty, lowered his ERA to 1.79 in nine starts.
Advanced A Carolina Mudcats
Nationals 4, Mudcats 2
Potomac scored three in the bottom of the first, which was enough to beat Carolina in a Carolina League game. Shortstop Ronny Rodriguez slugged his third home run for the Mudcats, a solo shot in the sixth. Carolina starter Mike Rayl (3-5) was the starter and loser, giving up four runs (all earned) and two home runs in six innings.
A Lake County Captains
Lugnuts 2, Captains 0
Lake County was shut out for the fifth time this season in a loss to Lansing, Mich., at Classic Park in Eastlake. Captains starter Cody Anderson (4-2) allowed six hits and two runs (both earned) in six innings. He also surrendered two homers.
Notes: One of the Lugnuts’ home runs hit the top of the outfield fence and then bounced over it.
Independent Lake Erie Crushers
Boomers 7, Crushers 4
DH Jason Taylor slammed his second home run for Lake Erie, but Schaumburg, Ill., won a Frontier League game at Pro Freight Stadium in Avon.
